The “folklore” Book Tag

It seems this week is going to be dedicated to Taylor Swift! I have this and an evermore book tag I was tagged in. I will post the evermore one tomorrow! Hopefully my answers aren’t repetitive.

Taylor really saved 2020. I am so thankful she released two indie/folk style albums, since that is a genre I love. I am living for this era!

I got this tag from Rose at White Rose Stories

Disclaimer: My memory is quite foggy when it comes to remembering trigger warnings from books I read years ago. Please do your research before starting any book I recommend. I will be adding triggers I can remember as well as what are in trigger data bases if applicable.

All synopses come from Goodreads. The book titles will link you to them. The graphics used for each question/prompt are all made by Tiffany from The Bookish Fantasy. Please check out her blog and send some love!

Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk

ts1-1She’s a fashion model who has everything: a boyfriend, a career, a loyal best friend. But when a sudden freeway “accident” leaves her disfigured and incapable of speech, she goes from being the beautiful center of attention to being an invisible monster, so hideous that no one will acknowledge that she exists. Enter Brandy Alexander, Queen Supreme, one operation away from becoming a real woman, who will teach her that reinventing yourself means erasing your past and making up something better. And that salvation hides in the last places you’ll ever want to look.

In this hilarious and daringly unpredictable novel, the narrator must exact revenge upon Evie, her best friend and fellow model; kidnap Manus, her two-timing ex-boyfriend; and hit the road with Brandy in search of a brand-new past, present, and future. Changing names and stories in every city, they catapult toward a final confrontation with a rifle-toting Evie-by which time the narrator will have learned that loving and being loved are not mutually exclusive, and that nothing, on the surface, is ever quite what it seems. tw: transphobia, drugs, death, gore, car accident

I read this over 10 years ago! This book was filled with so many twists and the ending was very shocking and dramatic from what I remember. Fun fact: This book inspired Panic! At the Disco’s A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out.

They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera

33385229. sy475 On September 5, a little after midnight, Death-Cast calls Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio to give them some bad news: They’re going to die today.

Mateo and Rufus are total strangers, but, for different reasons, they’re both looking to make a new friend on their End Day. The good news: There’s an app for that. It’s called the Last Friend, and through it, Rufus and Mateo are about to meet up for one last great adventure—to live a lifetime in a single day. tw: death, suicide ideation, animal death

The synopsis pretty much explains why this can you make you happy and sad. It was so wholesome… until the end.

Crossings by Alex Landragin

51170065On the brink of the Nazi occupation of Paris, a German-Jewish bookbinder stumbles across a manuscript called Crossings. It has three narratives, each as unlikely as the next. And the narratives can be read one of two ways: either straight through or according to an alternate chapter sequence. The first story in Crossings is a never-before-seen ghost story by the poet Charles Baudelaire, penned for an illiterate girl. Next is a noir romance about an exiled man, modeled on Walter Benjamin, whose recurring nightmares are cured when he falls in love with a storyteller who draws him into a dangerous intrigue of rare manuscripts, police corruption, and literary societies. Finally, there are the fantastical memoirs of a woman-turned-monarch whose singular life has spanned seven generations. With each new chapter, the stunning connections between these seemingly disparate people grow clearer and more extraordinary. Crossings is an unforgettable adventure full of love, longing and empathy. tw: rape mentions, violence, death, human sacrificing, war mentions

You can actually read this story in one of two ways! There is the traditional way, or the Baroness Sequence (which makes you jump back and forth between pages). I read it in the Baroness Sequence and it was so fun! You definitely have to focus because there are so many intertwined storylines, but it is so worth it! An extremely well-told story for sure.

The Spark by Jules Wake

55423809. sy475 Jess is falling for Sam.

Sam is falling for Jess.

But it seems life will do whatever it takes to make them fall apart.

When Jess and Sam lock eyes at a party, a spark ignites. The spark. But love at first sight isn’t like the movies, especially when Sam’s ex, Victoria, is determined to make their honeymoon period a living hell.

Is love at first sight enough?
tw: fatphobia

I kind of ranted about this in my last post and I feel bad to bring more attention to it, but I hated this. I might just not be the right person to read this, but I found the characters very annoying.

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

36174638. sy475 Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the court of King Peleus and his perfect son Achilles. Despite their difference, Achilles befriends the shamed prince, and as they grow into young men skilled in the arts of war and medicine, their bond blossoms into something deeper – despite the displeasure of Achilles’ mother Thetis, a cruel sea goddess.

But when word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, Achilles must go to war in distant Troy and fulfill his destiny. Torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus goes with him, little knowing that the years that follow will test everything they hold dear. tw: abduction, abandonment, blood depictions, child abuse, death, human sacrificing, human trafficking, murder, physical violence, plague (mentioned, graphic), rape (mentioned), self-harm, slavery, torture, war

Does this need an explanation? If you haven’t read this somehow, please read this and come cry to me.

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern

43575115. sy475 Far beneath the surface of the earth, upon the shores of the Starless Sea, there is a labyrinthine collection of tunnels and rooms filled with stories. The entryways that lead to this sanctuary are often hidden, sometimes on forest floors, sometimes in private homes, sometimes in plain sight. But those who seek will find. Their doors have been waiting for them.

Zachary Ezra Rawlins is searching for his door, though he does not know it. He follows a silent siren song, an inexplicable knowledge that he is meant for another place. When he discovers a mysterious book in the stacks of his campus library he begins to read, entranced by tales of lovelorn prisoners, lost cities, and nameless acolytes. Suddenly a turn of the page brings Zachary to a story from his own childhood impossibly written in this book that is older than he is.

A bee, a key, and a sword emblazoned on the book lead Zachary to two people who will change the course of his life: Mirabel, a fierce, pink-haired painter, and Dorian, a handsome, barefoot man with shifting alliances. These strangers guide Zachary through masquerade party dances and whispered back room stories to the headquarters of a secret society where doorknobs hang from ribbons, and finally through a door conjured from paint to the place he has always yearned for. Amid twisting tunnels filled with books, gilded ballrooms, and wine-dark shores Zachary falls into an intoxicating world soaked in romance and mystery. But a battle is raging over the fate of this place and though there are those who would willingly sacrifice everything to protect it, there are just as many intent on its destruction. As Zachary, Mirabel, and Dorian venture deeper into the space and its histories and myths, searching for answers and each other, a timeless love story unspools, casting a spell of pirates, painters, lovers, liars, and ships that sail upon a Starless Sea. tw: attempted murder, death, depression (mentioned), hallucinations, kidnapping, poisoning, pregnancy, stalking, suicide

I adore stories within stories and magical realism. I just want to live in Morgenstern’s work forever.

Gossip Girl by Cecily von Ziegesar

Welcome to New York City’s Upper East Side, where my friends and I live, go to school, play, and sleep—sometimes with each other.

S is back from boarding school, and if we aren’t careful, she’s going to win over our teachers, wear that dress we couldn’t fit into, steal our boyfriends’ hearts, and basically ruin our lives in a major way. I’ll be watching closely . . .

You know you love me,
gossip girl
tw: eating disorders, bullying, hazing, rape culture

Don’t judge.. This was all I would read as a tween and all I would watch as a teen. Blair Waldorf influenced me for years! She most likely still does.. Yeah, she does.

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

6519719Jay Gatsby is the man who has everything. But one thing will always be out of his reach. Everybody who is anybody is seen at his glittering parties. Day and night his Long Island mansion buzzes with bright young things drinking, dancing, and debating his mysterious character. For Gatsby—young, handsome, and fabulously rich—always seems alone in the crowd, watching and waiting, though no one knows what for. Beneath the shimmering surface of his life he is hiding a secret: a silent longing that can never be fulfilled. And soon this destructive obsession will force his world to unravel. tw: character death, cheating class discrimination, murder, misogynistic violence, racism (brief), wealth hoarding

“Hot summer nights, mid-July
When you and I were forever wild”
Yes, Young and Beautiful is canon.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab

51029810. sy475 France, 1714: in a moment of desperation, a young woman makes a Faustian bargain to live forever-and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets.

Thus begins the extraordinary life of Addie LaRue, and a dazzling adventure that will play out across centuries and continents, across history and art, as a young woman learns how far she will go to leave her mark on the world.

But everything changes when, after nearly 300 years, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore, and he remembers her name. tw: abusive relationship, alcohol abuse, assault (physical and sexual), death, depression, drugs, prostitution, sexism, suicide (attempted), war

I don’t know what book deals with loneliness more. This broke my heart.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

32620332. sy475 Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life.

When she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one in the journalism community is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now? Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband, David, has left her, and her career has stagnated. Regardless of why Evelyn has chosen her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.

Summoned to Evelyn’s Upper East Side apartment, Monique listens as Evelyn unfurls her story: from making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the late 80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way. As Evelyn’s life unfolds—revealing a ruthless ambition, an unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love—Monique begins to feel a very a real connection to the actress. But as Evelyn’s story catches up with the present, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways. tw: biphobia, car accident, cheating, death, divorce, physical abuse, suicide

This left me in awe and I can’t believe Evelyn Hugo isn’t a real person. I highly recommend this book and author!

Bunny by Mona Awad

42815544Samantha Heather Mackey couldn’t be more of an outsider in her small, highly selective MFA program at New England’s Warren University. A scholarship student who prefers the company of her dark imagination to that of most people, she is utterly repelled by the rest of her fiction writing cohort–a clique of unbearably twee rich girls who call each other “Bunny,” and seem to move and speak as one.

But everything changes when Samantha receives an invitation to the Bunnies’ fabled “Smut Salon,” and finds herself inexplicably drawn to their front door–ditching her only friend, Ava, in the process. As Samantha plunges deeper and deeper into the Bunnies’ sinister yet saccharine world, beginning to take part in the ritualistic off-campus “Workshop” where they conjure their monstrous creations, the edges of reality begin to blur. Soon, her friendships with Ava and the Bunnies will be brought into deadly collision.

The spellbinding new novel from one of our most fearless chroniclers of the female experience, Bunny is a down-the-rabbit-hole tale of loneliness and belonging, friendship and desire, and the fantastic and terrible power of the imagination. tw: body horror, animal death, drug use

Putting this here because I got into a slump and this has taken me out. I haven’t finished it, yet, but will do this weekend!

The Bridge Kingdom by Danielle L. Jensen

43383182. sx318 What if you fell in love with the one person you’d sworn to destroy?

A princess trained from childhood to be a lethal spy, Lara knows that the Bridge Kingdom represents both legendary evil – and legendary promise. So when she is sent as a bride under the guise of fulfilling a treaty of peace, Lara is prepared to do whatever it takes to fracture the defenses of the impenetrable Bridge Kingdom.

But as she infiltrates her new home – a lush paradise surrounded by tempest seas – and comes to know her new husband, Aren, Lara begins to question where the true evil resides. Around her, she sees a kingdom fighting for survival, and in Aren, a man fiercely protective of his people. As her mission drives her to deeper understanding of the fight to possess the bridge, Lara finds the simmering attraction between her and Aren impossible to ignore. Her goal nearly within reach, Lara will have to decide her own fate: Will she be the destroyer of a king or the savior of her people? tw: child abuse, drugging, self-harm, violence

Lara is such a badass character! I got completely mesmerized by her.

Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas

52339313. sy475 Yadriel has summoned a ghost, and now he can’t get rid of him.

When his traditional Latinx family has problems accepting his true gender, Yadriel becomes determined to prove himself a real brujo. With the help of his cousin and best friend Maritza, he performs the ritual himself, and then sets out to find the ghost of his murdered cousin and set it free.

He’s determined to find out what happened and tie off some loose ends before he leaves. Left with no choice, Yadriel agrees to help Julian, so that they can both get what they want. But the longer Yadriel spends with Julian, the less he wants to let him leave. tw: blood magic (referenced), character abuse (off-page), deadnaming of a trans character, death (parental), gender dysphoria, homophobia, misgendering of a trans character, transphobia

Does having an adorable ghost following you around count as haunting? In all seriousness, this book has a lot of hype and rightfully so! I enjoyed it so much, especially the latinx representation!

The Midnight Lie by Marie Rutkoski

34460349Where Nirrim lives, crime abounds, a harsh tribunal rules, and society’s pleasures are reserved for the High Kith. Life in the Ward is grim and punishing. People of her low status are forbidden from sampling sweets or wearing colors. You either follow the rules, or pay a tithe and suffer the consequences.

Nirrim keeps her head down and a dangerous secret close to her chest.

But then she encounters Sid, a rakish traveler from far away who whispers rumors that the High Caste possesses magic. Sid tempts Nirrim to seek that magic for herself. But to do that, Nirrim must surrender her old life. She must place her trust in this sly stranger who asks, above all, not to be trusted. tw: child abuse, drugging, emotional abuse, homophobia, subjugation

I feel this book really fell under the radar. I absolutely LOVED it! And the yearning between Nirrim and Sid.. SO GOOD.

Nikolai Lantsov from The Grishaverse

Nikolai Lantsov from grisha trilogy by leigh bardugo

I have been obsessed with this character since Siege & Storm came out! I am excited for the release of Rule of Wolves next year and hope Leigh Bardugo doesn’t do him dirty..

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

15507958They had nothing in common until love gave them everything to lose . . .

She takes a badly needed job working for ex–Master of the Universe Will Traynor, who is wheelchair bound after an accident. Will has always lived a huge life—big deals, extreme sports, worldwide travel—and now he’s pretty sure he cannot live the way he is.

Will is acerbic, moody, bossy—but Lou refuses to treat him with kid gloves, and soon his happiness means more to her than she expected. When she learns that Will has shocking plans of his own, she sets out to show him that life is still worth living. tw: sexual assault, self-harm / suicide, death / dying, ableism

I really wanted to watch the film adaption of this book, so I finally read Me Before You this year. I really didn’t like it all that much. Then, I watched the film and somehow the book was better than the film? Even Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin couldn’t save it! I know this is a beloved novel and film, but I just didn’t like it. I really wish I did.

And that concludes the tag. I had a lot of fun doing this and hopefully you found some books to add to your tbr!

I tag the three lovely babes over at Team Time Lit and Stardusted Books

Happy reading!
